The Alumni Association presents a free Continuing Education class on cloud computing, 6–8:30 pm Wednesday, Feb. 28, on the Rockville Campus. Apps used every day at home and at work are now available online in the Cloud. Cloud computing takes many forms, and it can be confusing to figure out how to get the most of each service. In this course, tailored specifically for Alumni Association members, you can explore productivity and media apps, from OneDrive to iCloud, Google drive to Netflix and iTunes, provided by desktops, mobile devices—and the Cloud. You’ll also explore the best ways to manage these apps on any device.

This course is free to Alumni Association members, by special arrangement with MC’s Workforce Development and Continuing Education division and the Lifelong Learning Institute. Space is limited, and seating is on a first-reply basis. To register and receive location information, email your name and Association ID (M number) to alumni@montgomerycollege.edu, or phone 240-567-5378.

Corrections Director Discusses Post-Incarceration Opportunity in “Defining America” Dialogue

Montgomery County’s director of correction and rehabilitation will join MC president DeRionne Pollard for a dialogue on incarceration, sentencing, and racial bias in American society, 7 pm Tuesday, Feb. 20, in the Theatre Arts Arena, Rockville. Robert Green’s 33 years of experience in one of the most diverse counties in the country have given him unique perspectives on correctional management and the implementation of special programs that serve incarcerated and returning citizens. Green is well versed in racial and economic inequities as well as disparities in education and workforce development.

The host of WAMU’s “1A” Program, joins Dr. Pollard for a dialogue on the role of the media as a pillar of American democracy, 7 pm Tuesday, March 6, in Globe Hall, Germantown. Journalist and broadcaster Joshua Johnson hosts a daily national conversation tackling the most pressing issues of our time. Whether discussing race, politics, history, or foreign policy, Johnson brings a spirit of informed inquiry to each topic he engages. His flair for exploring controversial issues while maintaining civility and intellectual rigor has been honed over the years working in public radio first in Miami, then in San Francisco, and most recently as the host of WAMU’s “1A” based in Washington, DC.

“Defining America” is a series dedicated to exploring identity and ideals in our nation. Challenges to traditional notions of who belongs in America have emerged in diverse, sometimes painful ways recently, revealing deep fissures in communities’ beliefs about what America represents. Guests join MC’s president, Dr. DeRionne Pollard, to explore the question of how we define ‘Americans’ and how dissent from majority opinion impacts national identity. The dialogues are free and open to the public. For more information about the series, phone 240-567-5267 or visit montgomerycollege.edu/dialogues.

The Alumni Association recognizes outstanding achievements of MC’s past students. You can be a part of that tradition on April 21 and celebrate the accomplishments of our fellow alumni!

Among the evening’s honorees are Paola Moya ’05, founder and CEO of Moya Design Partners, receiving the Milton F. Clogg Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award. Ms. Moya went on from MC to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees in architecture with a real estate development concentration from Catholic University. She also holds a finance certification from the Wharton School Executive Education program.

Before forming her own company, Ms. Moya led her previous firm’s successful expansion into new architectural markets outside the D.C. Metropolitan region, diversified the firm’s portfolio, and elevated its profile among the competition. Under her leadership, the firm won some of the most influential and renowned projects in the city—including the interior renovation of the Howard Theatre, and designs for the Chuck Brown Memorial Park, honoring Washington’s Go-Go pioneer.

Watch for ticketing details to come soon. For advance reservations or other information, email alumni@montgomerycollege.edu or phone 240-567-5378.

commencement photo
Alumni with daytime availability are invited to help celebrate the accomplishments of the Class of 2018 and welcome them into the Alumni Association. We’re looking for volunteers to staff tables at Grad Finale events in April, or to support the Alumni Association’s presence at Commencement on May 18. Advance training is provided for some activities.

If you can join us for one or more of those days, please email us at alumni@montgomerycollege.edu or phone 240-567-5378.

Are You Ready for #dogfishing4MC?

The semester ends with Commencement, but we keep going! Stay in town and join us May 22 at Gaithersburg’s Dogfish Head Alehouse to raise money for next year’s student scholarships.

Just by visiting the restaurant for a meal, you’ll support our efforts, because part of ALL sales that day (drinks, food, gear, you name it) goes to our scholarship fund, to help deserving students. We have a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle for a little extra to build the fund.

We’d also love to have help from a few of you who can give about an hour of your time during the event. We’re training volunteers in advance for some on-site activities—so if you’d like to pitch in, email our volunteer lead, Suzanne Thompson, at suzanne.thompson97@gmail.com for details.

To learn more about auction prizes and other plans for the day, check our event updates at facebook.com/events/131282157678853, and share the event page with friends to meet you there!
