Administrative Professional Day

This issue is dedicated to our administrative professionals. We recognize and celebrate the individuals who manage our offices and departments, and perform administrative duties. Thank you for supporting our faculty, staff, and students. We appreciate the work you do today and every day to advance the College’s mission.

From Dr. DeRionne Pollard, President:

There’s a truth that perhaps we keep too close to the vest at MC: our secret weapons—the ones who really protect the heart and soul of our College—are our administrative professionals. They are caring, no-nonsense, dedicated folks who usually know more about what’s happening at the College than the ones they are supporting. And my truth: I absolutely would be nothing without my colleagues in the Office of the President who take great pride in being the secret sauce to our work. Thank you all for what you do for MC!

The Suspension of Recruitment and Hiring

In accordance with the April 17, 2020 fiscal update memo, recruitment and hiring activities are being suspended for the next four weeks. Additional information related to the suspension of recruitment and hiring activities will be shared with hiring managers and posted on the HRSTM website.
We understand that this suspension of activities may have an impact on your department and we are committed to working with you to support your staffing needs during this time. We recognize that remote work can impact workload differently and that not all employees are able to accomplish all of their usual job duties. We are working to develop a process that will allow us to meet staffing needs through the use of internal talent. Staff may be reassigned from one area to another during this time. In the meantime, if your department has any temporary staffing needs or employees who are not able to accomplish all of their usual job duties in a remote setting, please contact the Human Resources Internal Consultant (HRIC) for your campus.
This is an opportunity to further develop internal relationships, create professional development opportunities for staff, and to work together to support each other and the College community during these unusual circumstances.

EAP Travel Update and Reimbursement

On March 11, the College community was notified of the temporary suspension of College-sponsored travel because of the spreading of the COVID-19 virus. The suspension of College-sponsored travel will remain in effect until April 30, as originally communicated. This decision was made in alignment with decisions and guidance from Montgomery County and Maryland State Departments of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Maryland Public Schools Closed Through May 15

On Friday, April 17, Governor Larry Hogan and State Superintendent of Schools Karen Salmon announced that Maryland public schools would remain closed until May 15, 2020. The College is closely monitoring the situation at the state and county levels and will revisit the decision to open when safe to do so. This extended closure helps ensure the safety and well-being of students, staff and faculty, and members of the community.

Cigna Launches Virtual Dental Care

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently issued guidance to dentists and patients recommending routine dental care be delayed due to the pandemic. Recognizing that patients may still need to access care for an infection or dental problem, Cigna has launched Dental Virtual Care. This service allows members to speak with a licensed dentist through video chat regarding urgent problems. Depending on the situation, the dentist may also be able to prescribe medications (deductibles and copays may apply to prescriptions). Cigna is absorbing the cost for the virtual visits for all dental members through May 31, 2020. To access the plan, dental members must log on to their myCigna.com portal and follow the prompts to be taken to Cigna Dental Virtual Care and TeleDentists.

Face Covering Requirement

As a reminder, Governor Larry Hogan issed an executive order requiring Marylanders to wear cloth face coverings on public transportation and in stores, beginning tomorrow. So, if you are in public for essential services—pharmacies, grocery stores and medical appointments—you must wear a face cover. The College is distributing face coverings to those employees who have to be on campuses for operations like safety and security or emergency maintenance.
A face covering can be a homemade cloth mask, a scarf, or bandana or other means of snugly covering the mouth and nose. If you need to make one, you can find some easy instructions here.

Expressions of Appreciation for our Administrative Aides

From Dr. Jamin Bartolomeo, Dean of Student Affairs:

My administrative support is awesome! They are a team of consummate professionals who I would depict as superheroes! They provide us the tools and resources we need so that we can be at our best and focus our time and attention on our students.

From Sharon Bland, J.D., CPM, Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer:

Administrative professionals are the glue that keeps our divisions running smoothly—thank you so much for all you do!

From Dr. Monica R.M. Brown, Senior Vice President for Student Affairs:

The outstanding administrative staff at Montgomery College are an elite core group of individuals who serve with honor and distinction. Thank you for all you do to make us better!

From Vicki Duggan, M.S., CCEP Chief Compliance, Risk, and Ethics Officer:

Administrative professionals—VIPs (very important people) in any team!

From Dr. John Hamman, Interim Chief Analysis Officer:

Montgomery College is fortunate to be able to attract many talented professionals, but nowhere is this more obvious and important than among our administrative professionals. I have had the pleasure to work with truly amazing and dedicated individuals in these roles and am filled with gratitude for the work they put in every day.

From Dr. Kim Kelley, Vice President/Provost, Collegewide ABEESS Unit and Rockville Campus:

The administrative support staff are the critical piece in the MC “puzzle.” Without them, the puzzle remains unfinished, the picture isn’t clear, and completion remains elusive. With the administrative support staff, the critical piece(s) comes together, the picture is beautiful, and there is a sense of satisfaction and completion. We need our administrative support staff! No matter where we are, they are the critical piece of the puzzle that makes everything come together.

From Margaret W. Latimer, Vice President/Provost, Collegewide STEM Unit and Germantown Campus:

I work with the most phenomenal administrative professionals (Tonya, Nicole, Melanie). What these colleagues do in a week’s work in a day! They make me look so much better than I am. Their professionalism, knowledge, and skill sets are on display every minute of the day. They are the face of the College to the public and to our students and colleagues. I am proud to work with such amazing professionals.

From Dr. Tonya R. Mason, Collegewide Dean of Student Success and Rockville Student Affairs:

I am so thankful for the fabulous support I receive from senior administrative aide, Nancy Han. She is organized, responsive, and she anticipates my needs before I do!

From Dr. Sanjay Rai, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs:

Our administrative support staff have always been critical to MC’s mission, but their contributions during the pandemic have shown that they are central to our success. I am most sincerely grateful for their efforts.

From Dr. Michelle T. Scott, Deputy Chief of Staff and Strategy, Office of the President:

Our administrative support staff have always been critical to MC’s mission, and their contributions during the pandemic continues to demonstrate they are central to our success. I am most sincerely grateful for their efforts.

From Dr. Tracey Smith-Bryant, Interim Department Chair, Psychology Coordinator, and Professor:

Like a lighthouse, our administrative aides (AA) stand ready to assist the College community. AAs remind all of us to stay on the path with the correct forms, deadlines, and all the names that we forget with the warning that we will crash on the rocks should we not follow their guidance. They save us at the darkest moments and they are beautiful reminders that we need not worry when we are away. AAs are the rock and the light! I am going to shout out Joan Rozario who is an amazing miracle worker and whose grace and poise are beyond her years!

From Dr. Brad Stewart, Vice President/Provost, Collegewide CHSHPEH Unit and Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus:

Many thanks to all of our wonderful administrative support staff during these challenging times. It’s never been more clear how important you all are to all of MC!
