College to Implement Recruitment and Hiring Freeze December 14
On December 7, 2020, a memorandum from Senior Vice President Donna Schena was sent to MC employees with an update on the College’s response to the continuing uncertainty and challenges imposed by the coronavirus pandemic as the College plans for the FY22 budget. Anticipating these revenue impacts, the College has been conservative in hiring for the past several months, with hiring restrictions in place since April. However, the College has now implemented a hiring freeze on all regular budgeted positions for faculty and staff. The Senior Administrative Leadership Team (SALT) has considered and recommended this step to Dr. Pollard, who has approved it. This hiring freeze is effective December 14 and will be reassessed in April of 2021. View the full memo here.

A Review of Talent Share
by Genet Aklilu, Office of Facilities
I find that the Talent Share Program is functional and effective. The timely action of the Office of Human Resources and Strategic Talent Management, and the system they implemented to facilitate the process within the departments or units, has been truly productive and encouraging. Through this program, our Facilities Office contributed Roberto Reyes and Martha Tsegaye to receive training, information, and knowledge on how the Occupational and Environmental Safety Office works. It is also important to mention that there could be challenges, but every challenge is simply another opportunity to learn and grow. The Talent Share Program works, provided we assign employees who are available to participate, acquire new skills, and adapt to a different work environment. The Talent Share Program shall continue to bring out the value of the human resources we have in our hands. Our office looks forward to continuing our support and our participation in the Talent Share Program.

FY21 Second-Quarter Performance Goals Review
Second-quarter performance goals for FY21 reflect goals achieved during October 1, 2020–December 31, 2020. This is an opportune time for the supervisor/manager and team member to review performance goals developed for this quarter. Together, goals should be reviewed to determine if they are still relevant, align with department and College goals, or should be adjusted. Ongoing and frequent conversations during the year are highly recommended as a strategy for engaging conversations about the outcomes of goals and enhance performance.
In addition, start a discussion about third-quarter goals for the period January 1, 2021–March 31, 2021. Use the SMART goals tool below to create your goals:
- Specific: Define specifically what you expect to do/deliver.
- Measurable: Identify how success is measured (quantity, quality, timeliness, or cost).
- Achievable: Accomplishing the goal is within an employee’s realm of authority and capability.
- Relevant: Link goal to the department or College goal
- Time-bound: Date/time goal is to be completed.
Resources to help you with tracking quarterly goal plans and reviews, and a quarterly goal form are available on the Performance Management webpage.
Questions about developing and reviewing goals can be directed to your designated HRIC,or email your questions to Performance.

HRSTM to Conduct Audit to Verify Dependents
You may receive an email from Nina Franklin, a contractor working in HRSTM’s benefits area, requesting proof of relationship for spouse and dependent children who are on your benefit plans. This is not a phishing scam and is indeed a legitimate email. Please upload documentation (marriage certificate and/or birth certificates for children) to the Workday system, our secure and confidential benefits system of record. This is a required condition of enrolling dependents in coverage and a dependent verification audit is something that most companies do at least every couple of years to remain compliant. If you have any questions or concerns, contact hrbenefits@montgomerycollege.edu.
