In Celebration of Equity Week, April 5–9

The Office of Equity and Inclusion proudly presents its first virtual Equity Week 2021 with the theme: “Bridging Generations: Unifying Conversations, Communities, and Culture.” The week will feature programs and performances by Montgomery College students, faculty, and staff, as well as nationally recognized presenters, Tim Wise, anti-racism essayist, author, and educator, and Lee Mun Wah, internationally renowned Chinese-American documentary filmmaker, author, Asian folk-teller, and master diversity trainer.

President’s Advisory Committee on Equity and Inclusion (PACEI)

A Conversation with James Gillis
Monday, April 5, 10–11 a.m.

James Gillis, director of campus facilities, serves on the President’s Advisory Committee on Equity and Inclusion (PACEI) as the senior vice president liaison for the Office of Administrative and Fiscal Services. PACEI is a multicultural, multi-generational team of faculty, staff, and administrators chosen by Dr. Pollard to serve as representatives of all facets of the College. Mr. Gillis will present on the goals and activities of PACEI and accomplishments to date. He will also share a preview of Equity Week events and answer questions. Register.

LET’S TALK! Series

“Debunking the Model Minority Myth and Responding to Asian-American Stereotypes in the Classroom”

Monday, April 5, 5–6:30 p.m.

What is the Model Minority Myth? The perception of universal success among Asian-Americans is dangerous and yielded to downplay racism’s role in the persistent struggles of all minorities. Join Montgomery College students, faculty, staff, and community leaders for a virtual in-depth conversation as we debunk the myth, face uncomfortable realities, and discuss real solutions. Register.

Directed by Ava DuVernay

Tuesday, April 6, 11 a.m.–12:30 p.m.

13TH is a 2016 Netflix original documentary film written and directed by Ava DuVernay, who wrote and directed the historical drama Selma. 13TH provides an in-depth look at the prison system in the United States and how it reveals the nation's history of racial inequality. The film won Best Documentary at the Emmys, the BAFTAs, and the NAACP Image Awards. Watch the documentary.

Ableism, Disability, and Inclusion

Presented by Professor Naliyah Kaya

Thursday, April 8, 9–10:30 a.m.

Dr. Naliya Kaya is associate professor and coordinator of sociology at Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus. She served as an advisor and evaluator for community-based social justice art exhibits including “BMORE Than The Story,” “Nations of Resilience,” and Redefine/ABLE. Dr. Kaya’s sociological work focuses on spoken word poetry, the self, multiraciality, unconscious bias, leadership, ableism and accessibility, and social justice. Skin Bleaching and Blacks: A Worldwide Epidemic

A Talk with Dr. Ufuoma Abiola

Thursday, April 8, 5–6:15 p.m.

This talk via Zoom will explore the ways in which skin bleaching affects Blacks. As a result of colorism, which is a form of discrimination based on skin tone that typically privileges lighter-skinned individuals and penalizes darker-skinned individuals, skin bleaching persists and is a worldwide epidemic. Join Dr. Ufuoma Abiola, a race scholar with expertise in colorism, identity, and equity, inclusion, and social justice for a discussion on skin bleaching and Blacks. Register.

Vial of COVID-19 vaccine with inserted needle

Germantown Campus Begins Serving As Mass COVID-19 Vaccination Site on March 31

Governor Hogan announced plans in a March 23 press release for opening six more mass vaccination sites in the state of Maryland—including MC’s Germantown Campus. Beginning on Wednesday, March 31, in the Bioscience Education Center (BE), health professionals staffing the site will begin administering vaccines to pre-registered individuals. As vaccine allocation increases, officials anticipate that by the week of April 5 the site will be able to distribute 3,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine per day. The College’s Office of Public Safety and Emergency Management issued a memo with additional details. See the memo.

National Arab American Heritage Month Discussion

Thursday, April 1, 4:30–6 p.m.

Join us for a virtual panel presentation via Zoom to celebrate 2021 National Arab American Heritage Month. Panelists will present interesting facts, connections, and resources from the Smithsonian Institution-affiliated Arab American National Museum in Dearborn, Michigan, the Middle East Institute, and the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies.
