Employee Spotlight: Meet Kaylin Nguyen from ELAP

Kaylin Nguyen attended Montgomery College right after high school and earned an A.A. in 2005. In 2006, she started working part-time in the Humanities area. Currently, she serves as administrative assistant to the dean in the English Language for Academic Purposes (ELAP), Linguistics and Communication, as well as the coordinator for the Frank Islam Athenaeum Symposia Speaker Series.
Kaylin feels very fortunate to work at a place where she can continue to pursue education. Thanks to the College, she earned a B.S. in 2014 and an M.S. in 2020 in human resource management from University of Maryland Global Campus.
Through her work, Kaylin knows there are many students who are not as fortunate, specifically students who are struggling financially. She decided to begin supporting students through payroll deduction to the Montgomery College Foundation. Growing up in a family that values education, Kaylin hopes that her contribution can make a great difference to MC students. For more information about how to enroll, contact Colleen Dolak, annual fund manager, directly at 240-676-2822.

Summer Pay by ESH for Non-Instructional Full-Time Faculty

As the Workday implementation progresses, we continue our efforts to improve and streamline our human resources business process. Starting with the 2021 summer sessions, non-instructional full-time faculty will be paid by ESH (equivalent semester hour) instead of by reporting hours on a timesheet. This change allows us to pay all faculty more efficiently and consistently year-round.
The ESH limits are still the same:
  • A maximum of 12 ESH (472 hours) over the course of the entire summer (Sessions I and II).
  • The first nine ESH (352 hours) will be paid at the regular ESH rate.
  • Up to an additional three ESH (120 hours) will be paid at the overload rate.
Specific hours-to-ESH conversion rates have been provided to the applicable department administrative aides (AAs), deans, and chairs in worksheets that will be used to collect proposed hours and convert them into ESH. The ESH calculations will be used to enter individual ESH rates when FLAC (Faculty Load and Compensation) opens on June 1, 2021. AAs should contact Rosalee Law with any questions.

Alert: Increase in Fraudulent Unemployment Insurance Claims Filed in Maryland

According to the Maryland Department of Labor, over 156,000 potentially fraudulent claims have been detected since the beginning of January. (These fraudulent claims are no indication that the College’s data has been breached.) Here are some things to watch for:
  • Any correspondence asking questions about your application, or indicating that your unemployment claim has been approved or rejected.
  • A letter including an unemployment insurance debit card.
  • Phone calls, texts, emails, or letters asking for your Social Security number or credit information.
  • Emails asking you to verify information by clicking on links within the email.
When Montgomery College is notified of a newly filed unemployment claim that appears to be fraudulent, Employee and Labor Relations will:
  • Reach out to you via email to verify that you did not file an unemployment claim. The subject line will read: ”Unemployment Claim-PLEASE RESPOND.”
  • Inform you that a fraudulent claim has been filed in your name and provide additional guidance on the next steps to address the fraudulent claim.
  • Notify the state of Maryland upon confirmation of a fraudulently filed claim.
If you have questions or suspect you are a victim of fraud, please contact Fiona Thomas.
