Steps on How to Apply for a Telework/Flexible Work Arrangement

As outlined in the Flexible Work Arrangements Procedure, approval of all telework agreements and flexible work arangements (FWA) must be based on the operational and service needs of a unit and the essential job duties of a position.
Please follow these steps for submitting requests for telework/flexible work arrangements.
  • Visit the Flexible Work Arrangements webpage for information, forms, and instructions.
  • Download and complete the Telework/Telecommute Application & Terms and Conditions Agreement form and/or the Alternate Work Schedule Application form.
  • Submit the completed agreement form(s) to your supervisors for approvals and signatures.
  • Your supervisor will return the approved and signed form(s) to you, so that you can complete the process by submitting the approved form(s) online.
  • Upload the approved form(s) at the Approved Flexible Work Arrangement Submission webpage to complete the process.
Should you have any questions or need assistance related to telework, please contact your area or unit’s designated HR Internal Consultant or email Flexible Work Arrangements.

Montgomery College Welcomes Two Payroll Specialists, Tsion Bekele and Minnie Muchai

The Office of Human Resources and Strategic Talent Management (HRSTM) is pleased to announce the addition of two new payroll specialists to the payroll services team in the HR Business Services unit. Both started on Monday, April 18.

Tsion (pronounced SEE-on) Bekele has over 10 years of accounting and payroll experience. Tsion’s most recent role was staff accountant at American Postal Workers Union Health Plan. In this role, she supervised a team of payroll clerks that managed all payroll processing, payroll related tax payments, retirement plan contributions, and providing ongoing customer service and support to employees. Tsion earned her bachelor’s degree in accounting from University of Baltimore and started her career in the Compliance Unit of the State of Maryland Comptroller’s Office. When she's not working, Tsion likes to read, hike, and travel. She has an Aussiedoodle named Solo. Tsion is trilingual: she speaks Amharic, English, and Italian.

Minnie Muchai is a seasoned payroll services professional with nearly 20 years of experience, Minnie comes to us from Frederick Health Hospitals where she served as the payroll coordinator. In this role, she was responsible for processing a bi-weekly payroll for 4,000 plus employees and $8 million monthly wiring and billing transactions, including processing special checks and W-2s, preparing monthly payroll summary reports, and providing ongoing customer service and support. Prior to her work with Frederick Health, Minnie served as payroll coordinator/analyst with Medstar Health for approximately eight years that included processing payroll for 1,400 to 6,000 employees. When she's not working, Minnie enjoys walking, hiking, playing golf, traveling, and sight-seeing.

Part-Time Faculty Spotlight: Colleen King

Part-time professor Colleen King is giving back to the College that inspired her to pursue a career in education. King joined the College in 2019 and teaches in the English and Reading Department on the Germantown campus.
“I graduated from Montgomery College in 2011. While attending MC, I had a professor, Sharon Anthony, help me recognize that I wanted to teach. She exuded patience, compassion, and a clear love for teaching. I am honored to call her my colleague ten years later,” King said.

After graduating from Montgomery College, King received her Bachelor of Arts degree from University of Maryland University College. She majored in English and minored in journalism. She earned her Masters of Arts degree in English and Creative Writing from Southern New Hampshire University. She received a second Masters of Arts degree in English from the same school.

Volunteers Needed for Commencement Special Assignments

Planning is underway for the College’s 75th Anniversary Commencement but we need your help with our students, faculty, guests, or other logistics that will make this a successful event. This year’s commencement, the first in-person ceremony since 2019, takes place at the Rockville Campus at 10 a.m. on two days—Thursday and Friday, May 19 and 20.
College services will be suspended both days until 2 p.m. to enable participation across all areas and all campuses of the College. Select your special assignment.

MC Center for Early Education Lab School Hosts Annual Art Show

The Montgomery College Center for Early Education (CEE) Lab School will host the 2022 Blooming Artist Gallery Show on May 6, noon–2 p.m. The show will be held outdoors on the children’s playground. Montgomery College staff and faculty are invited to attend. The show will feature children’s artful expressions of the works of Yoko Ono, Andy Warhol, Faith Ringgold, Maria Martinez, Yayoi Kusama, and Claude Monet to just name a few. Come and partake in the inspired work of our young artists. The educators of the CEE Lab School have created amazing documentation panels for you to review and reflect upon the children’s artistic journeys. Small goodie bags will be provided and a message board will be available for staff and faculty to write little notes of inspiration for the youngest MC raptors. Masks are required.

Workday Reminders, Tips, and Guidance

Since the opening of Workday on January 3, 2022, MC Learns through Workday is available again for FY22 required trainings and other professional development offerings. All MC employees can now enter time off, and hourly employees can enter time worked. Payroll and Finance are now fully live.
