Observing Juneteenth
As you likely know, Juneteenth is next Monday, the second year that an official federal holiday has marked this historic date. The date warrants recognition as African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were finally liberated from slavery there, two-and-a-half years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. Educational resources on Juneteenth abound and I encourage you to visit some of them, including the Library of Congress site.

June is Pride Month
Human dignity is being celebrated in several important corners this month with LBGTQIA+ Pride Month celebrations in full gear. For a fascinating history of LGBTQIA+ in D.C., visit the Capital Pride Alliance. We actively celebrate Pride in my home, and the family had a great time showing support in D.C. yesterday [June 12]. The MC Pride and Allies page has helpful resources for the College. I hope you will search out some ways to learn more about the achievements and struggles due to persecution experienced by LGBTQIA+ community members or join the June 29 Let’s Talk discussion on the topic, “LGBTQIA+ Young People and Mental Health.”
I continue to be energized by MC’s commitment to social justice and hope each of you will take advantage of one or more chances to grow in this direction. Read more in the June 13 edition of “President’s Corner.”

Part-Time Faculty Spotlight: John McCarthy
By Liz Feldman on behalf of the Part-Time Faculty Institute If you live in the DMV, then Montgomery County State's Attorney John McCarthy is likely a familiar name. McCarthy has served the past 16 years as State's Attorney and is running for a fifth term in November. While McCarthy is known for his outstanding trial lawyer skills, he has never lost a murder case; many may not know the 70-year old is a devoted and passionate educator who has dedicated more than half his life to teaching others.
He started teaching at Montgomery College 43 years ago.
"My initial entrance and teaching assignments at the College were through the business management department chaired by Dr. Fred Saint," McCarthy said.
He began teaching business law each semester for about 15 to 20 years, but then the College launched a magnet program for paralegal studies. Read more.

Summer Pause June 17 on SRAs, Teachers’ Pension, and 10-Month Employee Deductions
As you may be aware, deductions for Supplemental Retirement Annuities (SRAs), Teachers’ Pension System, and 10-month employees are based on 20 pays and therefore are stopped over the summer. Pay received between June 17 and August 26 will not include the SRAs deduction. Employees who are enrolled in the Employees’ Pension System and 12-month employees have deductions taken all year long (26 pays). Full-time faculty who are enrolled in the Deferred Pay program have their pay spread out over 26 pays but remain on 20 pays for insurance deductions. See the FY23 pay periods and pay dates schedule. If you have any questions, please contact the Office of Human Resources and Strategic Talent Management (HRSTM) HR Benefits team.
