Employee Spotlight: Meet Scott Poese
Scott has a bachelor’s and a master’s in mathematics and a certificate in data science. His duties include reporting College data to federal, state, and county government offices, internal stakeholders, like the President’s Office or the College Area Review Committee, ad hoc requests from faculty and staff, grant-funded projects, DFW reports, and dashboards.
Currently, Scott is in his twelfth year at MC. He began as an instructional assistant/associate in the Rockville Campus Math Department and earned his master’s and certificate thanks to the generous MC Educational Assistance Program (EAP).
Scott has always been in the vicinity of Montgomery College, as his mother began working at the College before he was born. He has watched the College become a more data-informed organization and is proud to help the students succeed.
In his free time, Scott enjoys camping with his wife and soon-to-be 5- and 3-year-old children, watching the Commanders, Terps, and Caps, playing video games, and assisting the MC Board Game Club.

MCTV Leads #YouBelongHere Movement at MC
Join the #YouBelongHere movement at Montgomery College! Montgomery College Television (MCTV) aims to attract a diverse student body and employee base by illustrating how MC’s welcoming and compassionate culture fosters a sense of belonging. Every first and third week of the month, Employee Matters will showcase a college employee.
This week, meet Shawn Sanders, who works with MC LEADS on the Germantown Campus, helping students discover and develop their leadership potential.
Join the #YouBelongHere movement! MCTV Producer/Director Danielle Stescki is leading the charge to capture a sense of belonging through photo, video, and social media content.
There are two ways to participate:
- Share a picture of yourself to be featured in the #YouBelongHere mosaic.
- Share a personal statement describing your experience of belonging at MC or your definition of diversity and inclusion.
MCTV aspires to feature a wide range of MC family members, develop authentic and meaningful connections, and show how everyone plays a vital role in creating an open community and a safe space for all.

National Autism Awareness Month: When a Loved One Has Autism Spectrum Disorder Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurological and developmental disorder. The condition affects the brain, causing social interaction and communication problems and making it hard for the person to relate to the outside world.
Some common symptoms of ASD include: speech problems, such as no speech, non-speech vocalizations, delayed development of speech, echolalia (repeating something heard), social withdrawal, sensory sensitivity, passive-aggressive behavior, preference for routines and repetition, islets of competence, which are areas where the child has typically developed or even advanced competence (such as drawing, arithmetic, music, memory skills), and seizures.
Because the symptoms of ASD are sometimes confused with those of other conditions, it is important that the disorder be diagnosed by a professional who has experience working with autistic individuals.
There is no definitive "cure" for ASD, but there are different treatment methods that can improve symptoms and help manage the disorder. Depending on the severity of the person's symptoms, a doctor may suggest one or more of the following treatments:
- Biochemical: medication, food and vitamin supplements, and treatment for food allergies, which may contribute to autism symptoms.
- Neurosensory: training and stimulating the senses, facilitated communication and speech therapy, daily life therapy.
- Behavioral: behavior modification training.
If you are caring for an individual with autism, take one day at a time; develop a normal routine, find ways to communicate, help him or her feel like a regular person, stay current with treatment options, join a support group, embrace emotions, and adopt an approach toward others that works. For more information, visit the MC CARES Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (FSAP) webpage.

Emergency Evacuation Accommodation It is important for all employees to have an emergency evacuation plan in place in the event of an emergency. Those who may need assistance during an evacuation due to a disability should consider identifying themselves to employers and building managers to aid in the planning process.
