MC Center for Early Education Lab School Hosts Annual Show on May 4

The Montgomery College Center for Early Education Lab School will host its annual 2023 Blooming Artist Gallery Show on May 4, from noon–2:00 p.m. The show will be held outdoors on the children’s playground (children will be inside). MC faculty, staff, and students are invited to attend.
The show will feature children’s artful expressions of the works of Yoko Ono, Faith Ringgold, Maria Martinez, Yayoi Kusama, and Claude Monet, to name a few. Come and discover the inspired work of our young artists. The wonderful educators of the CEE Lab School have created amazing documentation panels for you to review and reflect upon the children’s artistic journeys. Small goodie bags will be provided, and a message board will be available for guests to write little notes of inspiration for the young aspiring artists.

April Showers Bring May Flowers, But Fruits and Vegetables Bring Health Year-Round

According to a recent study published in Circulation (2021), a journal of the American Heart Association, a meta-analysis of 26 studies) identified the optimal intake of fruits and vegetables for long-term health. Increasing the amount of fruits and vegetables that you consume can improve your health and lower the risk of serious medical conditions. The study looked at data to see how different amounts of produce affect general health. It also focused on the risk of death from cancer, heart disease, and respiratory disease.
Researchers compared people who ate five (5) servings of fruit and vegetables each day with people who only ate two (2) servings a day. Those who consumed five (5) daily servings had:
  • 35 percent lower risk of respiratory disease
  • 13 percent lower risk of death
  • 12 percent lower risk of heart disease and stroke
  • 10 percent lower risk of cancer
It's easy to incorporate more fruits and veggies into your daily nutrition by adding two fruit servings (3/4 cup to 1 cup each) and three vegetable servings (2/3 cup to 1 cup each) daily. Whether you snack on fresh berries, add spinach to your morning smoothie, or load up on colorful veggies at dinner, your body will thank you for making the switch to a healthier lifestyle.

Employee Spotlight: Meet Carrie Shaw

Carrie D. Shaw has been a faculty member with the English Language for Academic Purposes (ELAP) Department in Germantown since 2005. She implements a student-centered approach with technology in the classroom and strong individual student advocacy for success. She has a BA in political science and French from Saint Mary’s Honors College of Maryland and an MEd from the University of Maryland.
Carrie is a lifelong avid swimmer who encourages other MC faculty and staff to take advantage of the MC pool facilities through our MC Wellness-sponsored swim meet-up called Co-swimmers. In September 2022, Carrie reached out to Megan Cooperman, the new Employee Wellness Specialist, with her idea to start an employee swim group at Germantown. Carrie hoped to inspire and motivate fellow MC employees to meet up at the pool to practice swimming laps and strokes and participate in water exercises to benefit their overall health. Megan thought this was a terrific idea, appreciating Carrie's motivation to inspire others to move during their day, and has valued working with Carrie and the Co-Swimmers ever since. Swimmers and aqua fitness attendees of all levels are always welcome.
MC Wellness would like to recognize and thank Carrie for her dedication to the well-being of herself and others!

The #YouBelongHere Movement at Montgomery College

Twice a month, Employee Matters will feature a #YouBelongHere Montgomery College Television (MCTV) spotlight on a college employee and their personal story of belonging at MC.
This week, the spotlight is on Professor Valérie Tanner, an Integrated Studies faculty member who, in her role as an academic advisor, helps students understand the options and resources available at MC to help them reach their educational and career goals.
MCTV makes it easy for YOU to share the spotlight in the #YouBelongHere campaign:
  1. Share a picture of yourself to be featured in the #YouBelongHere mosaic, and/or
  2. Share a personal statement describing your experience of belonging at MC, what made you feel you belonged here, how you found acceptance at MC, or your personal definition of diversity and inclusion.
Through the #YouBelongHere campaign, MCTV hopes to feature a wide range of members of the MC family, help build authentic and meaningful connections, and show how everyone plays an important role in creating an open community and a safe space for all. Will you be the next MC employee in the spotlight?

Fit It In: Building Exercise Into a Busy Schedule

In todays fast-paced world, squeezing in a workout can seem like an insurmountable task. Yet, with strategic planning and access to up-to-date exercise resources, incorporating physical activity into your daily routine can be simpler than anticipated. It is essential to consult your physician before commencing any fitness regimen. One way to streamline your schedule is by compiling a list to prioritize and structure your days. Eliminate extraneous engagements that add little value to your life and concentrate on what matters most to you and your loved ones.
Health experts used to advocate structured aerobic exercise programs that required 20 minutes of vigorous activity at least three times a week. Good planning can be the key to an effective exercise program. Take a good look at what you do every day. If you have time, keep a log of the activities you engage in on a typical day. Then sit down and evaluate your schedule.
Setting goals for yourself can keep you motivated to find time to exercise. We all have days when exercising just does not seem worth the effort. When you get discouraged, remember that regular physical activity reduces your risk of developing many illnesses. Exercise also gives you extra energy and helps you feel better about yourself.
