The Next Phase in COVID-19 Healthcare Coverage
The federal COVID-19 public health emergency will end on Thursday, May 11, 2023. Beginning May 12, 2023, COVID-19 vaccines, testing, and treatment will be covered like any other condition.
For Kaiser Permanente Members
- COVID-19 vaccines will be covered under preventive benefits at applicable plan cost-sharing, typically $0.
- COVID-19 PCR testing will be covered under the outpatient diagnostic lab benefit at the applicable plan cost-sharing.
- COVID-19 over-the-counter (OTC) antigen tests will not be covered, consistent with current plan coverage that does not cover OTC tests.
- COVID-19 treatment will be covered under the drug benefit with applicable plan cost-sharing.
- Out-of-Network (OON) Services for COVID-19 (e.g., OTC antigen tests, treatment, and vaccines) will only be covered for urgent care and emergency services when legally required.
For Cigna HealthCare Members (Cigna plans use Caremark as the prescription vendor)
- Covered as Preventive:
COVID-19 vaccines will be covered under the preventive benefit, same as the flu shot, at 100 percent in-network only at a doctor’s office. - Covered as medically necessary/appropriate with an applicable cost share based on plan design and place of service:
• PCR lab testing: coverage under your lab benefit • FDA-approved antivirals and therapeutics • COVID treatment - No longer covered:
Over-the-counter (OTC) COVID-19 tests. The Internal Revenue Service does consider these tests eligible medical expenses reimbursable under health savings accounts and flexible spending accounts. Customers may use funds to pay for OTC kits separate from the health plan.

Employee Spotlight: Meet Farah VivasMeet Farah Vivas, a dynamic HR Workday analyst who works in the Office of Human Resources Strategic and Talent Management (HRSTM) Business Services unit. Farah moved to the United States from Venezuela in 1980. She attended The Catholic University in D.C. and earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and a master's degree in biomedical engineering.
In 1997, Farah returned to Venezuela to focus on raising her daughters. Unfortunately, political turmoil in Venezuela forced them to return in 2010 to start over.
Starting over meant joining MC and launching a new career path in 2013 after twenty years of being out of the workforce. Farah started off as a casual temp until 2015, when she became an HR associate. As she transitioned into HR, she earned the SHRM-CP certification and a management certificate at MC.
Looking back at her HR experience, Farah takes pride in all of the Spanish-speaking employees whom she has had the privilege of assisting.
Becoming a Workday HR analyst and a Workday-Pro professional is a significant achievement. Workday’s implementation was a complex and challenging process that required strong project management skills, technical expertise, and a deep understanding of the HR function. Farah attributes this achievement to her academic background and unique career path, both of which have given her a skillset and perspective that are versatile and adventurous.
In her spare time, Farah loves to spend time with her dog, Matata, and travel the world.

#YouBelongHere at Montgomery College
This month, Employee Matters features Montgomery College Television MCTV’s #YouBelongHere spotlight on Alexander Valencia-Reyes, an enrollment and student access specialist at the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus.
Alexander enrolled at MC after arriving from El Salvador. He earned an associate degree from MC in international business and is currently pursuing an associate degree in American Sign Language. Alexander has worked at the College since 2014 and has served on the Staff Council from 2017–2019.
Enrollment and Student Access Specialists like Alexander are the first point of contact for new students and Raptor Central's information resource for students, parents, and the public seeking information about MC's academic programs, services, and other resources.
This onsite interaction creates a welcoming and inclusive environment and strengthens the relationship between the College and the potential student and their family.
- Share a picture of yourself to be featured in the #YouBelongHere mosaic and/or

Emergency Evacuation Accommodation It is important for all employees to have an emergency evacuation plan in place in the event of an emergency. Those who may need assistance during an evacuation due to a disability should consider identifying themselves to employers and building managers to aid in the planning process.
